Product review: Facial scrubs

Exfoliating is such an important step in skincare because it gets rid of dead skin sitting on the top of skin which over time gives a brighter complexion and smoother texture. Getting rid of dead skin also helps products that come after the exfoliation step to absorb better into the skin. It is therefore worthy to get a good scrub that works for your skin. There are two ways to exfoliate - mechanical and chemical. Today's focus is on the former.

For many months I have used the Clean & Clear Morning Energy Skin Brightening Daily Facial Scrub. This product is amazing and does the job perfectly. Your face would be scrubbed with bursting beads gently enough to be used everyday. I used this both morning and evening on some days to show how gentle this product is. It has a wonderful citrus fragrance that just wakes you up in the morning. I know that fragrance can be irritating if you have sensitive skin but I personally didn't feel any discomfort.

With every use my skin is left smooth and free of oil and dirt which immediately brightens up my face. This prepares my skin for my moisturiser. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to improve their skin tone and texture. This product is also helpful for preventing acne because it reduces the likelihood for pores to get blocked. Please note that this product can not lighten dark marks/hyperpigmentation but only gives you a nice glow by thoroughly cleansing the skin. The product is available in a lot of pharmacies and supermarkets in Nigeria. The US version comes with a pump and is called Morning Burst Skin Brightening Facial Scrub.

After learning of the benefits of salycilic acid, the St Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub caught my eye as it contains the highest amount of salycilic acid sold over the counter, that is 2%. It also contains walnut shells and cornmeal for exfoilation. There are two reasons why I can't use this product. Firstly, it is way too abrasive for my skin. My face just ends up feeling very sensitive. I also could not tolerate the amount of salycilic acid in it. I never knew this about my skin until I used this product and also the Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash which also has 2% salycilic acid in it. Instead of smooth skin, I ended up with rashes all over my face and I had to stop wearing foundation for some days to let my skin heal.

I will continue using the Clean & Clear Morning Energy Skin Brightening Daily Facial Scrub for now but I'm very interested in trying chemical exfoliation with products like Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads and Pixi Glow Tonic. If you have a recommendation for a good exfoliant, please let me know!

  2. St.Ives Green Tea scrub is an absolutel fave of mine! I used to be an Apricot Scrub loyalist but it's a little to harsh on my skin.
