Review: Clinique Perfectly Real Compact Makeup

I've been using the Clinique Perfectly Real Compact Makeup for almost a month so I believe it's safe to share my thoughts on it. I ran out of my MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation and while I was satisfied with it, I wanted to try something else. You know, discover if there's anything better out there or just as good. These days, I try to make getting ready in the morning as quick as possible so I wanted to get something with more coverage so I can ditch foundation all together on weekdays. The MAC Mineralise Skin Finish was on my list for the longest time but I tend to shy away from anything that is not matte just because of my oily T-zone. I'm honestly still curious about MAC Mineralise Skin Finish so maybe I will pick it up in the future.

I purchased my Clinique Perfectly Real Compact Makeup from The Nail Studio in Victoria Island, Lagos. It was actually my first time visiting and I was only accompanying a friend who needed to get her eyebrows done but I ended up in a chair testing makeup. It's a pressed powder version of the Clinique Perfectly Real Foundation. I wanted something that looked and felt natural and skin-like and Clinique claims that the powder and foundation does just that. The powder comes in a very beautiful and unique packaging which is one of the things I love about it. It also comes with a sponge but of course you can apply with a makeup brush.

The makeup artist applied the powder in shade 144 on one side of my face and the Foundation on the other side. For reference, my MAC foundation Studio Fix Foundation shade is NC50. She used the Clinique Superprimer for Dullness first and I'm not kidding, I could hardly notice a difference between the two sides. On closer inspection though, I found that the foundation looked smoother than the powder. She also did not put any powder on the foundation and it looked amazing. I did not experience oiliness for about 5 hours. Completely love the way it looked - natural, even, matte and like you are not wearing makeup!

Using the powder everyday, it looks great and natural since I don't need much coverage. It definitely improves my skin tone and mattifies my skin on application. However, it certainly does not look as great or last as long as it did with the primer. The magic seems to have come from the primer which costs about N9,000. Next time I would try the product alone and not with the primer since I had no intention of buying it.

UPDATE 22/09/2016: I found the perfect primer for this powder and it keeps it flawless all day! Please read about it here.

In Nigeria's hot and humid weather I would say you could wear this alone if you just want to pop in and out of the house for a few hours and you don't want to wear a ton of makeup. However, the original purpose was to improve my skin tone and remain intact for about half the day of work yet look natural. I don't think this can be achieved without a good primer or foundation underneath meaning more time applying makeup. I really love it over foundation and that's how I've been wearing it.

I spent N12,400 on this powder which at the current rate is very similar to UK pricing at £23. I know that you can buy Clinique products at Montaigne Place but I have no idea how much it costs there. Would I buy this powder again? Maybe. There are very much more cheaper powders out there that are similar but Clinique products are 100% fragrance free and less likely to cause skin irritation. Also like the MAC powder, I won't need to replace this till next year. If I find a long wearing powder that gives a flawless finish without the extra primer or foundation step I will buy that instead, especially if it's cheaper and the formula is decent. Has anyone found a powder that good? I would love to know.
