Why I'm using Nivea Men After Shave Balm as a primer!

I once saw someone ask Beauty guru, Jackie Aina her thoughts on Nivea Men After Shave balm and she responded shocked because why would she need to use a product targeted at men? The lady explained that lots of people have been using it as a primer. There's been a lot of buzz about this balm in the media and I've been very curious. It's an inexpensive product meant to soothe the skin after shaving yet somehow NikkieTutorials discovered that it works very effectively as a makeup primer.

UPDATE 11/08/2016: Nikkie's recommendation is the SENSITIVE version while I have here the ORIGINALS. I apologise for the confusion. The sensitive version can be purchased in Nigeria at Game for N1,050 and some other major pharmacies.

Nivea Men After Shave Balm from MedPlus Nigeria

This product is also known as the Nivea Men Post Shave Balm in the UK and Australia. The one I bought however seems to be made for the Middle East. It comes in a small but heavy bottle (I don't know what the bottle is made of and why it's so heavy). The fragrance is quite strong, similar to men's cologne. First of all I hate products with fragrance in it and it's worse that it smells like men's perfume. Thankfully, this smell doesn't last and I can't perceive it by the time I'm done applying my makeup. The balm also has alcohol in it and this may be a problem for people with dry skin.

It's a very light-weight product almost like a serum. I find that the effects are best when I apply my foundation when my face is still a bit moist from the product so I don't wait for it to fully absorb. My foundation applies smoothly and just stays in place much longer. I also get better results using a foundation brush rather than my fingers.

Now I tried this with two different foundations and got different results. First was a light foundation which is Mac Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 and then Milani Perfect + Conceal 2-in-1 Foundation and Concealer which is a thicker foundation. I had the most amazing results with the Mac Studio Fix foundation SPF 15! With the Milani foundation, my nose became a bit shiny at the end of the day but the rest of my makeup stayed in place. I wouldn't say it is the best primer since I haven't used a lot of primers but if you are looking to buy a good primer, this balm definitely does the job.

You can buy the Nivea Men After Shave Balm at any MedPlus Pharmacy in Nigeria. MedPlus has outlets in Lagos as well as Port Harcourt, Warri, Ibadan and Ilorin. You can find addresses on their website. You can also get it here on Konga.com

So what do you think? Would you be trying this out or have you already found your ultimate primer? Let me know in the comment section :)

  1. This is my absolute FAVOURITE makeup primer! I would say it is the best I've ever tried, and such great value since you get 3 x as much as a normal primer, yet for a fraction of the price! x

    1. That's actually true! How often do you find a primer that's 100ml? :)
