How To Get Rid of Stretch Marks

I haven't personally struggled with stretch marks but many people do. Some people are not bothered by these scars while some are really affected and miss out on many experiences like going to the beach. I decided to do some research about how to truly get rid of it and here is what I found.

Stretch marks occur when your skin stretches because of rapid body growth or weight gain. You may have noticed your first stretch mark when you were undergoing puberty. This is when a lot of people first start seeing stretch marks as their body changes. I've seen girls with stretch marks on their chests and also guys with stretch marks on their shoulders from growing so tall.

If you are looking to get rid of stretch marks, the bad news is that if you have had it for a couple of years and you want to get rid of it as an adult it may not completely clear. There are a lot of products that claim to be effective in getting rid of stretch marks such as Bio Oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Cream or Lotion. However, there are only two ways of getting rid of stretch marks and frankly stretch marks are more likely to fade if they are treated when they are just starting to form.

A prescription retinoid is the answer to this problem such as Retin-A. This is a topical vitamin A cream or gel. Get proper medical advise before you begin to use this in order to know if you are fit to use it and whether the other products you use may interact with it. For example, pregnant or breastfeeding women are not advised to use retinoids so if your stretch marks are appearing as your belly grows, it's best to wait till after your baby is born. It is important to do a patch test first to determine if you are allergic to it. If no irritation occurs you can use it on the affected areas. If you have stretch marks from using a topical steroid this treatment will not improve it. Only a dermatologist can suggest a useful treatment.

With any topical vitamin A product, I would suggest to go easy. Use every other day instead of daily. It is also better to use at night because vitamin A makes you sensitive to sunlight. In Nigeria I'm sure you can just walk into any pharmacy and purchase it but I would strongly advise that you have a doctor choose which one is best for you. They come in different strengths and forms so your doctor would advise you on which is best.

As for how much it costs, it is about N4,000 and you can it online here. All hope is not lost if your stretch mark has been there too long to fade with retinoids. The option of laser treatment is available to treat stretch marks and is far more effective. Have you had any luck getting rid of stretch marks?

  1. I have a few stretch marks and I'm not too bothered by them. I have found that cocoa butter and shea butter work well at making them fade.
I didn't know about Retin-A before. Sounds interesting. Thank you for sharing :)

  2. Stretch marks are my friends now. I used to hate them, but they're part of me so I have learnt to accept them. Not so much on my arms though. Ha! Thanks for sharing this. I haven't heard of them before. Great!!

  3. This is very informative. I have stretch marks from my pregnancy. I learned to live with them. They were purple and they were very visible. You are right about the Bio-Oil. It's actually one of the products I used postpartum. It allows them to fade, but it will not rid the fact that your skin is stretched. FYI if your pregnant (anyone reading this comment) use cocoa butter or Bio-Oil before they start to appear. Great read!
